On October 27th, 2017, Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and the Embassy of Finland in Vietnam organizes the Opening Ceremony for Technology and Innovation Expo and Seminar within the framework of “Ho Chi Minh City Innovation, Startup and Entrepreneurship Week 2017” (WHISE 2017) taking place from October 23rd to October 28th, 2017 to honor organizations and individuals who contribute actively to innovation and startup ecosystem and introduce successful startup models to community. This also illustrates joint efforts between public and private sectors to promote startup and innovation development in the City, moving toward the City of innovation and startup, catching up with the region and the world.
The Opening Ceremony was attended by Mr. Le Thanh Liem – Standing Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, H.E. Mr. Kari Kahiluoto – Ambassador of Finland to Vietnam, Mr. Tran Quoc Khanh – Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, and some related departments, businesses, startups, and local and foreign partners in Ho Chi Minh City.
Shortly after the opening ceremony, the City People’s Committee and the Embassy of Finland in Vietnam co-hosted the 2-day event named “Together with Finland “, which was co-implemented by Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology, Vietnam-Finland Innovation Partnership Program (IPP) and Hatch! Ventures Vietnam.
This joint event marks the milestone in the collaboration between Ho Chi Minh City and Finland with the desire to share experiences and cooperation potentials in the City’s focused areas. The 2-day event includes a series of keynote speeches and panel discussion among over 30 experts, startups and innovation ecosystem developers from Ho Chi Minh City and cities of Finland such as Helsinki, Turku, Tampere on 3 topics including Education for Future, Smart City Solutions, and Startup and Innovation Ecosystem Development. This event also serves as an opportunity for Finnish companies to share experience and showcase their solutions.

On this occasion, The Slush (GIA) Contest has been introduced in Vietnam for the first time to select impactful startups with innovative solutions to emerging markets. After the pitching session, iNext Technology passed 15 companies and won the top award with a trip to join Slush GIA Finland that will take place at the end of November.
Besides the above highlighted events at White Palace. some other activities as onsite visits, direct meetings and trade connecting with Vietnamese partners for 18 Finnish companies from IPP’s Vietnam Market Access & Partnership (VMAP) Program have taken place during two days with the support of IPP’s Vietnamese Innovation consultants. This illustrates tremendous potential for cooperation between Finland and Vietnam generally as well as Ho Chi Minh City particularly.
In the evening of October 27, 2017, within the 100th anniversary of the Finnish National Day organized by the Embassy of Finland, Mai Linh Group and Kyyti Corporation, a Finnish company from VMAP program, have signed an MOU on technology transfer of a technical platform solution for mobility to manage the operation of transportation system with better benefits to customers.
As Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Mr. Tran Quoc Khanh emphasized in the opening speech, Vietnam-Finland Innovation Partnership Program (under the management of Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland) has gained a lot of success in supporting innovation and startup ecosystem in Vietnam in the past few years and now focus on promoting trade cooperation between the two countries.

In the upcoming time, through IPP and other Finnish agencies, Finland will promote the trade cooperation, investment and technology transfer with Vietnam, not limited to Ho Chi Minh City, but also with other provinces of Vietnam, especially on the Finland’s areas of strength such as education, information technology, communication, water management, agriculture and forestry, etc.
